Summer is when your warm-season grass is in full swing but can be a stressful time for you and your lawn with some extreme heat periods. Having a good healthy lawn this time of year will help keep things cooler around the house. A grass surface can act like an exterior air conditioner on a 40-degree day. Up to 30 degrees cooler to touch than a timber deck and up to 40 degrees cooler than artificial turf!!

Watering

Regular deep watering is better for your lawn than frequent shallow-watering. A deep good soak once a week will encourage a deeper root system (a deeper root system will also help your grass through the winter).

Keep an eye on the weather and be sure to rely on some summer storms to save some water. In summer the best time to water is early morning or in the evening. It's not a good idea to water during the heat of the day.

Fertilising

Giving your lawn a regular boost with slow-release lawn fertilisers is important to maintain good health. We recommend applying fertiliser every 10 weeks.

Mowing

The main key to the best lawn in the street is regular mowing especially this time of year. Regular mowing will stop you from scalping your lawn, so mowing just a third of the leaf at a time is best. Mowing earlier in the day or as the sun is starting to set will stop your lawn being to stressed by the peak of the sun. Sharp mower blades will cut much cleaner and also reduce stress to the grass. You might need new blades or you could just sharpen them.

Weed Control

Just like spring, your warm-season weeds can be popping through, there is a couple of ways to tackle it. You can pull them out by hand as you see them don’t walk pass them! Or you can use a pre-emergent like Oxafert to kill the weed before it emerges or if things are a bit out of control you can apply a selective herbicide before to check the label before application.
